Vision in White
A tired property in need of context…
Designing for “Prince Edward County chic.”
Our first priority during the design phase was to link the spaces between the home and the barn.
This was done through a carriage house, which anchors the gardens and whatever activities take place within them. The carriage house is situated back from the home, central to the new swimming pool and adjacent terrace and gardens.
The gardens were intentionally designed and built to appeal to all of the senses. The all-white plant palette responds to the light differently throughout the day and season. It draws the owners and guests to enjoy the outdoors throughout their stay at this country retreat while embodying an elegant “County-chic” style.
A private retreat from the outside world.
One of the key challenges was to create a sense of privacy from the country lane that separates the gardens while maintaining the view of the waterfront.
By creating terraces to define the spaces, along with a series of low plantings that hide the view of the laneway from the pool, this client now enjoys a full view of the water beyond.
Other features include the vegetable garden, butterfly meadow, and the many plants selected to bring birds — and their beautiful songs — into the garden.
Key Design Elements
-
Custom-Designed Carriage House
This wonderful outbuilding features wide, glass French doors with an open central interior space backed by a glass roll-up garage door. When opened up, the view runs from the sunflower meadow through the carriage house, to the pool terrace, to the great lawn and ultimately to the lake beyond.
-
Monochromatic White Gardens
Reminiscent of Sissinghurst’s White Garden, a wide selection of flowering trees and shrubs are employed, with a rich palette of herbaceous plants providing white flowers through the season. All plants were selected for their contributions towards the overall texture and appeal to the senses.
-
Pool Terrace & Great Lawn
The great lawn provides a broad space for outdoor games such as croquet, while hiking trails allow guests to explore the natural features beyond the home. The flagstone dining terrace and outdoor kitchen sit adjacent to the interior kitchen and dining room, providing easy access and flow when entertaining.
