On Saturday, October 29th, 2016 we celebrated the grand opening of Babcock Mill Park in Odessa. As much as it was a celebration of a new park it was also a celebration of the importance of children immersing themselves into a natural playground that stimulates all their senses and imaginations.
Commercial designer, Tara Galpin worked closely with the Odessa Lions Club who spearheaded the implementation of this park, and Loyalist Township.
Currently in place is phase one of the design. Phase two will include swings and a sand play area, though no date has been set yet. The masterplan includes pathways through the park and seating areas.
Now, more than ever, it is critical to emphasize the importance of ourdoor play and embrace nature and all of it's elements. The obesity rate is climbing and the amount that children - and adults alike - spend outside has been rapidly drecreasing since video games, netflix, and other relevant technologies have become deep-seated in our homes.
We challenge you to notice the expressions on kids' faces when they're playing outside, notice how you feel when you're in your backyard gardening or eating dinner on your patio. Notice the shift in mood and disposition. Being outside doesn't just feel good... it is good- for you, for your body, for your mind, for physical development, and for so many more reasons.
This is the first generation that is expected to have a shorter lifespan than their parents. Let's reverse that. Get up. Get moving. Get outside. It's that simple.
