Keeping 'Play' Alive with the Green Street Challenge

Blog Featured Image

The Green Street Challenge creates the opportunity to celebrate the importance of outdoor, unstructured play by laying down sod and creating temporary parks on prominent streets in communities across North America! This year marked our 8th annual Green Street Challenge in Picton.

Starting with just a few hundred square feet of sod, a rainbow parachute, and a few soccer balls in its first year, the event has grown in size and popularity. This year we sodded 5500 square feet of Picton Main St. from Elizabeth St. eastward. The event featured a Hobbit Hole that you could crawl through, roll down, jump off, or claim yourself "King/Queen of the castle!" from atop. There was an art installation on the ground that looked as though you were going to fall from a cliff, but don't worry there were pillars you could hop across to get to the other side safely...Phew! A Minecraft zone was created using large block structures covered with sod that could be used in whatever way your imagination took you, to bring to life the infamous video game.

Two craft stations allowed kids and adults to create a 'seed bomb' of colourful flowers and a homemade birdfeeder using pinecones, lard, and birdseed.

Amidst all of these features were good old fashion games and toys for people to use how they wish. Afterall, this is all about encouraging people to spend more time outside and embrace the art of unstructured play. Usually, a fun game of soccer takes place between kids and adults of all ages.

It's truly inspiring to witness and be part of so many imaginations at play!

None of this would be possible without our amazing sponsors and volunteers. Thank you to all of you who helped us put on another amazing event!
